Snow Leopard – Billabong Zoo, Port Macquarie, NSW – photo caption competition winner

Congratulations to Betty Fontenot a visitor to the Zoo from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. Betty visited the Zoo in late January and submitted a caption. Her winning entry “Has Elvis left the building!”. She won an Up-close personal encounter with two of our resident Snow Leopards. In her words the experience was “Awesome! I am truly impressed with Billabong Zoo and the amount of information your Zoo Keepers know and are happy to share with visitors. The Snow Leopards are magnificent and it so so sad they are a threatened species with so few numbers left in the wild. Keep up your Conservation through Education program Billabong – I am sure it will make a difference.”  Thank you Betty, it was good to see you at the Zoo.

There is another week left for you to enter our Red Panda photo competition. Winner will receive an up-close encounter with our Red Pandas (nb you have to 14 years old or over for the Encounter , if a younger person wins the caption competition the winner receive a $50 Zoo gift voucher).

HA HA!!” from Gabby and a few with a Christmas theme “Must…….stretch…….jaw…….must…….fit…….Santa’s…..big belly…. in this year if we catch him!” from Tania. or “This is the face you make when you step on a lego block in bare feet on Christmas morning” from Armando.  Plus a few which made us laugh but we can’t publish!

MEDIA DAY FOR AFRICAN LION CUBS AT BILLABONG ZOO, PORT MACQUARIE

Today was Media Day for our new African Lion cubs at Billabong Zoo, Port Macquarie. They behaved so well for our head keeper Christy Brown who has spent much time with them during their 30 days of quarantine.  Even though they are still extremely shy, with encouragement from Christy, they ventured outside into their purpose-built enclosure and posed for the TV and press cameras. Over the coming weeks visitors to the Zoo will be able to witness daily Keeper Inter-actions with the cubs as they grow in confidence and trust in their new surroundings. We will be posting daily updates on our Facebook page as to the likely times they may be viewed. But at this stage, until they are accustomed to their new environment we cannot set any definite times as we do not want to put any additional stress on these beautiful young animals until they are confident enough to face the public. But, from what we are observing so far, they are growing in confidence daily. And they are soon cute.

Work on the wombat enclosure – a love barrier

Up-grade to the wombat enclosureWhen a male wombat gets amorous he’s hard to stop. So, in the interest of our female wombats, who may not be responsive to his advances we are installing visual love barriers in our wombat enclosures.  However, we are ever hopeful we will be successful in breeding wombats here at Billabong Zoo. If you haven’t had the chance be sure to visit the wombats and see the unique underground viewing area where you can see our four wombats – 2 species  –  Common wombats and 2 Southern Hairy-Nosed wombats sleeping  – which they do a lot of during the day. Did you know? The entrance to the female Wombat’s pouch faces backwards. This is to prevent dirt from entering it when she is burrowing.
