Today was Media Day for our new African Lion cubs at Billabong Zoo, Port Macquarie. They behaved so well for our head keeper Christy Brown who has spent much time with them during their 30 days of quarantine.  Even though they are still extremely shy, with encouragement from Christy, they ventured outside into their purpose-built enclosure and posed for the TV and press cameras. Over the coming weeks visitors to the Zoo will be able to witness daily Keeper Inter-actions with the cubs as they grow in confidence and trust in their new surroundings. We will be posting daily updates on our Facebook page as to the likely times they may be viewed. But at this stage, until they are accustomed to their new environment we cannot set any definite times as we do not want to put any additional stress on these beautiful young animals until they are confident enough to face the public. But, from what we are observing so far, they are growing in confidence daily. And they are soon cute.

Work on the wombat enclosure – a love barrier

Up-grade to the wombat enclosureWhen a male wombat gets amorous he’s hard to stop. So, in the interest of our female wombats, who may not be responsive to his advances we are installing visual love barriers in our wombat enclosures.  However, we are ever hopeful we will be successful in breeding wombats here at Billabong Zoo. If you haven’t had the chance be sure to visit the wombats and see the unique underground viewing area where you can see our four wombats – 2 species  –  Common wombats and 2 Southern Hairy-Nosed wombats sleeping  – which they do a lot of during the day. Did you know? The entrance to the female Wombat’s pouch faces backwards. This is to prevent dirt from entering it when she is burrowing.
